“Barrier fees” and dormant-wallet scare stories

A caller who invents a new tariff so your “idle” trading balance is not seized is selling fear, not law.

After a broker loss, some victims get a second call from someone claiming to be a “controller”, auditor or market watchdog. The story has evolved. Instead of only demanding insurance and legalisation fees to unlock a withdrawal, the caller now warns that if you do nothing, a “barrier tariff” will let the desk quietly treat your balance as abandoned and take it “legally”. Stay on the line, pay a smaller fee, and they will “protect” the account.

That is still an advance-fee script. Unlicensed trading websites do not become honest custodians because a stranger invents a tariff name. Real supervisors do not cold-call you to collect crypto so your funds are not confiscated. The goal is to restart payments from someone who had almost given up — or to keep the original crew’s access warm.

If a balance is stuck on a dubious platform, document everything and use ordinary bank and police routes via Get help. Do not pay a new fee to a caller who arrived with the bad news. Anything pitched as paid rescue belongs under Fake recovery.

If this sounds familiar, start at Get help. If someone is already selling a paid “fix”, read Fake recovery before you send another fee.
