Coinbase is a large, publicly known crypto platform. Affiliates such as Coinbase Custody Trust Company have held New York limited-purpose trust authorisation under the New York State Department of Financial Services (NYDFS), and Coinbase, Inc. has long held New York virtual-currency and money-transmitter licences. That footprint answers the narrow question “is there a real company?” — it does not make every email with a blue logo safe, and it is not investment advice.
The pitches that fill inboxes are usually the opposite of the real site. Someone claims $10,000 sits on a Coinbase wallet and needs a $1,000 unlock fee. The From line is [email protected] or another near-miss domain. SMS links lead to coinbase-secure-style clones. A caller asks you to install remote-access software or read out a seed phrase. None of that is how the genuine firm returns forgotten balances.
Check the URL yourself: the consumer site is coinbase.com. Enable strong two-factor authentication that is not SMS if you can. Never pay a stranger to “release” funds you never deposited on Coinbase. If you already did, preserve the messages and use the reporting routes below — and treat the next “recovery agent” as a second hit.
