BtcTurk is a long-running Istanbul-based crypto exchange (founded 2013) and a major local BTC/TRY venue. That seniority is real. It is not a magic shield. Security firms and news desks reported a roughly $55 million hot-wallet incident in June 2024, then another multi-chain drain of about $48–49 million in August 2025, after which the firm paused crypto deposits and withdrawals while insisting cold storage held most assets.
Local licensing and KPMG-style reserve checks, where they exist, matter for compliance theatre and for users who must bank in lira. They do not erase operational risk: sudden KYC freezes, halted transfers during incidents, and the simple fact that exchange IOUs are not coins in your hardware wallet. Acquisition rumours from years past are irrelevant to whether you should park life savings on any hot stack.
Use BtcTurk — or any regional champion — as a on-ramp and off-ramp, not as a vault. Move size you cannot lose to self-custody, and treat “temporary maintenance” during an incident as a reason to reduce exposure, not to deposit more.
