Blockchain Revolution (2016): useful primer, loud promises

Don and Alex Tapscott’s business bestseller still explains the basics — and still overshoots the utopia.

Blockchain Revolution: How the Technology Behind Bitcoin Is Changing Money, Business, and the World landed in 2016, before the ICO carnival, before DeFi summers and winters, before a decade of quieter enterprise pilots. Don and Alex Tapscott wrote for executives, not protocol engineers: distributed ledgers as a “trust protocol”, fewer middlemen, new business models. As a plain-language on-ramp, chunks of it still work.

As prophecy, it aged like most first-wave manifesto books. Banking did not dissolve. Smart contracts did not become the default operating system of capitalism. Useful niches appeared; the open “revolution” branding did not. Reading it now is partly history of hype — valuable if you notice which sentences are explanations and which are sales energy.

That distinction matters when someone waves a 2016 hardcover to sell a 2026 token, club or “blockchain course”. A popular book is not due diligence. Ask what ships today, who holds the keys, and how you get money out without a Telegram curator. Optimism is allowed; outsourcing your scepticism to a decade-old dust jacket is not.
