Block, Inc. (formerly Square) is a listed payments and consumer-finance group. In October 2020, still under the Square name, it announced a $50 million bitcoin purchase — about 4,709 BTC — and later added roughly $170 million more. Company materials and SEC exhibits describe those coins as a long-term treasury holding, not a day-trading book.
The bitcoin story is wider than the balance sheet. Cash App lets customers buy and sell bitcoin. Spiral (once Square Crypto) funds open-source bitcoin work. Separate efforts have included developer platforms under the TBD label and self-custody hardware such as Bitkey. That mix — product rails plus a corporate stack — is unusual among large fintechs, and it is all disclosed through ordinary public channels.
Scam desks still borrow the brand. A chat that says “Dorsey private sale” or “Block mining pool for retail” is not how a Nasdaq company raises money. If you want facts, open Block’s own site or filings; if you want a deposit link from a stranger, close the chat.
