Will quantum computers break bitcoin tomorrow? Probably not

ECDSA and SHA-256 have theoretical quantum angles. Scammers have immediate invoices.

Bitcoin’s transaction signatures (ECDSA) are the main long-term quantum talking point: a sufficiently large fault-tolerant machine running Shor’s algorithm could, in theory, derive private keys from exposed public keys. Hashing for proof-of-work is a different, milder story under Grover’s algorithm. Serious estimates still put a practical break years to decades away, which is why the industry discusses post-quantum migrations instead of declaring the chain dead.

That nuance vanishes in fraud land. You get “IBM cracked BTC — move coins here”. Moving coins to a stranger is the attack. Keep keys offline from chat apps; follow widely reviewed wallet software; ignore apocalypse CTAs.
